The Everglades National Park , the third largest park in the nation covers more than 2,000 square miles and holds a beauty incomparable to any other place in the world. Serving as home to nearly 300 varieties of birds, 600 kinds of fish and more than 40 indigenous species of plants, the Everglades is a nature lover's paradise.
|
At first glance, much of the Everglades looks like inviting prairie that visitors could easily hike through on a nice day. But looks are deceiving. Most of this plain is actually a shallow, gently flowing river, hidden beneath the tall sawgrass and reeds. Except in the pinelands and hardwood hammmocks, there is water everywhere. Luckily for visitors, well-designed roads, trails and boardwalks keep feet dry while allowing travel through remote areas. And for those who want to explore watery pathways, a number of canoe trails offer adventure into spots accessible only by boat. Bicycling along park roads also lets visitors get closer to nature and discover places that might be missed while traveling in a car. |
|
| Three visitor areas lie in Everglades National Park, and each shows a different side of the region's rich character. Shark Valley, the northeastern entrance off the Tamiami Trail, offers tours into the sawgrass prairie, abundant in birdlife and alligators. The northwest Tamiami gateway is at Everglades City, jumping-off place to the Ten Thousand Islands, a Gulf Coast mangrove archipelago popular with anglers and vacationers. The main visitor area, southwest of Homestead, marks the beginning of a 38-mile park road that meanders through sawgrass prairie, hardwood hammock, cypress swamps and lake regions, ending at Flamingo on the edge of Florida Bay. This main road offers access to numerous Everglades habitats via a variety of short and long trails. |
| Winter is the time to visit the Everglades, the only season when mosquitoes won't eat you alive. In winter you can leave your car, walk the trails, canoe the streams and contemplate the subtle beauty of the place. There are no breathtaking panoramas in this region, where the altitude seldom rises above three feet, but rich rewards await those who take the time to explore. Slumbering alligators lie like half-sunken logs in shallow ponds. Comical anhingas gather on low branches, hanging their wings out to dry after fishing forays. Bird populations are spectacular and diverse, including such easily recognized favorites as roseate spoonbills , osprey , brown pelicans and bald eagles. Subtly colored snails and wild orchids adorn the woods in season. Endangered and rare animals such as the gentle manatee , the Florida panther and the American crocodile, though seldom seen, reside deep within the watery world of the Everglades. |

There are a variety of activities for visitors to enjoy such as hiking, bird watching, canoe trips, fishing , boating, nature talks, tram tours, demonstrations and campfire programs. All the information you need is available at the Main Visitors Center located at the entrance to the park. From the Keys, travel north on US1 to Florida City. Turn left at West Palm Drive (S.R. 9336) and continue nine miles to the park entrance. Upon arriving, stop by the park visitor center , there you will be given an introduction and different ways to experience its wonder. |
